Each and every one of us welcomes the New Year in ways that are unique to us. But, many of us share a common denominator, and that’s making New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps the most popular sentiment we share to this day is losing weight.
We’re always on a quest to better ourselves, and shedding a few extra pounds is one great way. There is nothing with achieving our ideal weights, but going about it in unhealthy manners could lead to terrible circumstances, including the development of an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia nervosa.
Individuals with these disorders can seek help at treatment centers, but it’s always best to prevent them from developing in the first place. We can do so by taking a healthy route from the get-go.
Don’t Just Buy into Popular Diets
It seems as if trendy ways of dieting come out every passing month. The ketogenic diet, Atkin plans, various juice cleanses — these are some of the more popular diets recently.
While these diets can be beneficial to our health, it’s not guaranteed to work for everyone. Inquiring a medical professional should be the first step. Also, instead of blindly subscribing to these diets, we should go about the best method of losing weight to this day: eating properly.
There’s no need to skip meals or eliminate an entire food group from our daily intake. Rather, we should revise our current diets to make it a little more healthy. One thing to do is to increase our protein intake. Our bodies tend to burn more calories when it’s digesting the protein that we eat. A high-protein diet also leaves us feeling more full and reduces our appetite.
We should eat more fruits and vegetables too since they are high in water and fiber content, and low in calories. Apples, broccoli, and cabbages are some examples that have almost zero calories.
Do Be Mindful of Lifestyle Choices
Being active is another tried and tested way of losing weight. Not all of us can afford to go to the gym regularly, but this shouldn’t stop our fitness journey considering the numerous cardio exercises we can do without gym equipment.
Cardio is a great way of losing weight since doing these exercises leads to calories being burned. Not only that, but they help in shedding any fat that tends to build around our stomachs. Running, jogging, power walking — these are some examples that we can include in our daily routines.
We should also be mindful of what we do during our downtimes. Too much time spent in front of the television or computer can lead to snacking. If either can’t be helped, we should make an effort of snacking on healthy alternatives instead of bags of chips. Carrot and celery sticks, hummus, and even vegetables in chip forms are better snacks.
Staying conscious of our daily lifestyle choices is the best way to abide to our New Year’s resolution. Keeping active, eating healthy foods — these are activities that become habits if we do them frequently.
